As far as I know, it aims to make more radical changes than UnNetHack.

It's also worth mentioning some of the more out-there variants:ĭNetHack ( ) is comparatively new and I haven't played it, but is getting pretty good reviews.

The choice between the above four is basically down to personal preference you basically have two axes of "vanilla/rebalanced gameplay" and "vanilla/rewritten interface", and can make your own mind up where you want to be there. If you want more extensive gameplay changes than NetHack 4 has, but like the more extensive interface changes that it brings, this is probably the variant for you.

Once it's finished, I hope that it'll be the definitive way to play NetHack with close to vanilla gameplay.ĭynaHack ( ) was originally based on UnNetHack's gameplay, and the same interface and engine code that NetHack 4 was based on (although it's diverged in both directions since). That said, it's not really production-ready yet (although we have an entirely playable beta on the public server). The interface has been entirely rewritten (and in my opinion, greatly improved), and we're trying to get the internals cleaner as a base for further development. NetHack 4 ( ), the variant I work on, is aiming to modernize NetHack's interface and internals while staying relatively conservative with gameplay changes. It also contains more extensive interface improvements from NAO (many of which were backported from other variants the active variants share interface patches relatively cleanly). Because it removes various exploits from the game, it's somewhat harder than vanilla NetHack. This is likely the most popular variant that tries to make major gameplay changes. UnNetHack ( ), an attempt to add more variety and interest into the game. If you want to play something as close as possible to "official" NetHack, this is the way to play it. However, it's the most popular by far among players playing online. This is the most conservative of the variants, missing widely used patches like autoopen I find it a little frustrating to play. This tries to keep very close to the original, but includes several bugfixes and interface patches. (or NAO), a public server running a modded version of NetHack. That said, I'll try to give a good rundown.Īs far as I know, the most popular NetHack variants are: Therefore, this view might be a little biased. I'm one of the maintainers of a NetHack variant (NetHack 4).
